The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman is a haunting and lyrical tale about a man who returns to his childhood home and is drawn back into memories of a mysterious and magical past. As a boy, he befriends a girl named Lettie Hempstock, who claims the pond near her farm is an ocean. Together, they face dark, otherworldly forces that threaten their world. The novel weaves themes of memory, innocence, loss, and the enduring power of friendship, blending fantasy and reality in a profoundly moving story.

This book is like crack. Once you start, there is no going back. Firstly, I loved that it was fast-paced and probably the reason why I finished it in one seating. The story focuses on Georgie who returns to his childhood home and is met with a wave of nostalgia when visiting the Hempstock’s farm. Years before, Lettie gave herself to the ocean to save his life and this flashback comes all too scary almost hard to believe that they happened to such a young boy.
